CDAP is the most directly relevant federal program for SMBs adopting AI. It provides grants of up to $15,000 to small businesses for digital transformation — which explicitly includes AI software, automation platforms, e-commerce tools, and digital marketing infrastructure.
In addition to the grant, CDAP provides access to a funded digital advisor who works with your business to build a digital adoption plan. The advisor's time is also covered. This means you get both the money and the guidance.
BDC provides favourable-rate loans specifically for technology investments, including AI tools and automation infrastructure. Unlike grants, these are loans — but at significantly better rates than commercial lending, often with flexible repayment tied to revenue growth.

The credit refunds 15% for large corporations and up to 35% for Canadian-controlled private corporations (CCPCs) on qualifying R&D expenditures. If you're spending $50,000/year developing AI capabilities, SR&ED could return $7,500–$17,500. Most claimants work with an SR&ED consultant who works on contingency.
The Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) supports large-scale AI projects — primarily relevant for mid-size to larger businesses building AI products or infrastructure. Less relevant for most SMBs, but worth knowing if you're scaling an AI-centric product or service.

PrairiesCan (Prairies Economic Development Canada) has replaced Western Diversification and covers Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Farm Credit Canada has agri-AI programs. IRAP regional offices serve both provinces.
